Job Description:
The Senior Accountant is an integral member of the GAAP accounting team, reporting to the Director of Technical Accounting. The role is responsible for performing and reviewing complex accounting activities, ensuring the integrity of the general ledger, and maintaining compliance with corporate policies and U.S. GAAP. In addition, this position serves as the primary accounting resource for AIR’s self-funded insurance program, overseeing its financial activity, funding, banking reconciliations, and reporting in partnership with Benefits and Treasury.

Approximately 50% of the role will focus on accounting and banking oversight for the self-funded insurance program. The remaining approximately 50% will support general ledger accounting, month-end close, financial analysis, internal controls, and process improvement for assigned entities. The allocation may vary with close cycles, program implementation, and business needs.
This is a hands-on accounting role ideal for a driven, detail-oriented professional seeking exposure to multi-entity accounting, self-funded insurance financial operations, consolidations, and finance transformation in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Self-Funded Insurance Accounting and Banking Oversight

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting and financial reconciliation activities for the self-funded insurance program, including medical and pharmacy claims, administrative fees, stop-loss premiums, and reimbursements, as applicable.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, expense accruals, prepaid balances, receivables, and balance sheet reconciliations associated with the program.
  • Coordinate with Benefits, third-party administrators, brokers, and actuarial resources to obtain claims data and support the calculation, documentation, and recording of incurred-but-not-reported (IBNR) claims liabilities and related adjustments under the Director of Technical Accounting’s review.
  • Monitor claims funding requirements and cash balances; prepare funding forecasts and coordinate timely transfers and payments with Treasury and authorized approvers in accordance with company policies.
  • Provide accounting oversight of designated claims funding and insurance-related bank accounts; reconcile bank activity to administrator reports and the general ledger, research discrepancies, and resolve outstanding items promptly.
  • Review funding requests, claims payment summaries, and vendor invoices for consistency with supporting reports, contractual financial terms, and approved amounts; coordinate resolution of discrepancies with Benefits and service providers.
  • Calculate, record, and reconcile insurance cost allocations and related intercompany balances across participating entities using approved methodologies.
  • Track stop-loss reimbursement submissions, receivables, and collections in partnership with Benefits, administrators, and carriers; reconcile recoveries and escalate overdue or disputed amounts.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports showing claims expense, administrative costs, funding activity, accrued liabilities, reimbursements, and actual-to-budget variances; explain trends and significant changes to Finance and Benefits leadership.
  • Maintain documented controls and audit trails for funding, payment approvals, account access, and reconciliations, including appropriate segregation of duties and secure handling of sensitive information.
  • Support program implementation, new entity onboarding, annual budgeting, year-end accounting, and audit requests related to self-funded insurance financial activity.
General Accounting and Related Responsibilities: General Ledger and Month End Close
  • Execute and review journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform and review intercompany reconciliations across multiple entities; research and resolve variances promptly.
  • Record and reconcile commission accruals and payments to ensure accurate expense recognition and compliance with applicable accounting policies.
  • Support the month-end close process for assigned entities, adhering to corporate deadlines and regional calendars.
